In the world of agarwood, Ky Nam is regarded as the "king of agarwood"—rare, mysterious, and extremely valuable. However, a name that often confuses newcomers to this market is Ky Hai Nam. Many people mistakenly believe that Ky Hai Nam is a special or higher-quality type of agarwood. In reality, Ky Nam and Ky Hai Nam represent two distinct kinds. So, what exactly is Ky Nam? Is Ky Hai Nam the same as Ky Nam? Additionally, why do agarwood connoisseurs frequently mention Vietnam when discussing Ky Nam? Let’s explore these details in the article below.
What is Ky Nam?
Ky Nam is a type of wood that contains a significant amount of aromatic resin produced by the Aquilaria crassna. Unlike Agarwood, which forms due to external wounds, Ky Nam is created when the Aquilaria crassna incubates itself internally, causing it to secrete resin over a long period. This resin is absorbed by the wood, transforming it into Ky Nam. In contrast, the process of forming Agarwood involves exposure to air and the external environment, whereas Ky Nam develops entirely within the core of the Aquilaria crassna.

However, not every Aquilaria crassna produces Ky Nam. It is quite rare for a tree to yield Ky nam, and when it does, the quantity is typically less than that of Agarwood, which contributes to Ky Nam's higher value.
Ky Nam is categorized into four main types based on its color:
1. Bach Ky Nam: This type is white, soft, and possesses a lot of oil.
2. Thanh Ky Nam: This variety is green, oily, and soft, with some pieces being harder.
3. Huynh Ky Nam: Characterized by a yellow color similar to beeswax, this type is hard and heavy, becoming lighter as it dries.
4. Hac Ky Nam: This type is black and has a hard texture.
Uses of Ky Nam
In Terms of Health
According to Oriental medicine, Ky Nam is a herb known for its ability to eliminate phlegm and treat various ailments such as headaches, dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, it nourishes the body, enhances longevity, protects against the wind, and provides warmth.
The pleasant and attractive fragrance of Ky Nam wood is effective in reducing stress and fatigue, helping individuals relax, stay alert, and sleep easily. Furthermore, Ky Nam can purify the air and repel insects.
In Terms of Spirituality
In Eastern beliefs, Ky Nam is regarded as a top-tier feng shui item and is often worshipped for its protective qualities. It serves as a talisman that wards off evil spirits and bad luck.
Similar to Agarwood, Ky Nam holds significant spiritual meaning and is believed to bring luck and prosperity to its owner. It is also thought to repel negative energy and promote wealth, making it a sought-after item for many individuals.

What is Ki Hai Nam?
Ky Hai Nam is a type of artificial Ky Nam, which is essentially a variety of agarwood originating from Hainan Island, China. Currently, artificial Ky Nam is quite prevalent on the market, and its development has been researched and created by the Chinese.
It is important to clarify that Ky Hai Nam is not the same as Ky Nam (internationally known as kinam or kyara). Ky Hai Nam agarwood is a new variety but is mostly recognized within the agarwood community.
Some easily recognizable characteristics of Ky Hai Nam include:
1. Wood Quality: Ky Hai Nam has a distinct level of humidity and the wood is slightly soft, primarily due to its shorter growth time. The high oil content and inherited properties from Ky Nam give Ky Hai Nam a feeling of wetness and stickiness when held.
2. Scent: Ky Hai Nam has a naturally strong, pleasant, and impressive scent. However, it is not identical to the scent of other woods, and its scent diffusion is somewhat less intense. In comparison, Ky Hai Nam has a sharper and stronger aroma than many other types of agarwood.
3. Color: Ky Hai Nam typically exhibits an earthy yellow color, with the intensity varying based on the oil density within the wood.

Vietnam – The Origin of Premium Ky Nam
Vietnam is renowned as the country with the highest quality natural Ky Nam in the world, particularly in regions such as Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai. For centuries, the Vietnamese have developed a tradition of harvesting and utilizing agarwood, which has deep cultural significance, playing a role in Buddhist rituals and traditional medicine.
Beware of Counterfeit Products and Market Confusion
Currently, many products marketed as Ky Nam are available, often at inflated prices. Consumers should be aware that much of what is sold as Ky Nam today is actually Chinese Ky Nam, which is of significantly lower quality and value compared to the rare Vietnamese Ky Nam.
